Of course it's important. Especially as it makes posts readable and understandable. Plus I have OCD about spelling and grammar mistakes. I'm not perfect myself but some things are so obviously wrong it's irksome.
It also, unfortunately, makes you look less intelligent when you cannot be bothered to post in proper English.

Weighing in here! Yes this is definitely important, in all areas of life, really. It doesn't matter, I don't think, the type of forum, you can still convey any mood or character without the grammar suffering. We no longer live in an age where we hv 2 tlk lyk ths bcz we hv T9 fone keybrds, and frankly if I have to make a conscious effort to read peoples' words without those words flowing off the page to me - they're doing it wrong!

For a blog I think it's pretty important. For a forum it is important for certain areas. There are always areas that members can let loose, but I think generally people should be able to type properly.
