Do you think that spelling and grammar is important on a website, forum, or blog? Please tell us your thoughts and explain why you feel the way you do? I think it is dependant on the board really and what the purpose is I think having good spelling and grammar in posts especially from the staff members shows some professionalism on the community Although i hardly use full stops i always indicate a new line by leaving gaps between each sentence like my posting style here Dave

Yeah, especially on a website. I don't care what kind of site it is, the goal is always to look professional! Specifically if it's a site that's selling something. I mean, I personally wouldn't buy from a manufacturer that can't even put sentences together correctly. To me, it just shows a bit of immaturity and laziness. Like using "u" instead of "you" - that's kind of a pet peeve to me... I mean seriously how much longer is it going to take for you to type out two more letters?! It especially annoys me when my aunt sends me texts filled with that kinda thing ("y" for why, "b" for be, "ru" for are you, etc...) but that's getting off the subject. Hah. I think using correct spelling/grammar just makes the site/forum/blog look better in general. And it's easier to read, especially to a person like me who immediately notices any mistakes... I find them in published books all the time.

i h8e whn ppl tk lik dis. lik, y r u strt forum an u no kow how 2 tlk proper ? lik omg guis i just got done yellin at some1 for typin like a adlt. all matuurreee and wat not. I don't think every reply should always have impeccable grammar, however if people cannot understand what on earth you are saying then I do believe you need a grammar fix. Websites ALWAYS need proper grammar, I have passed up on so many web hosts because of the lack of grammar it's not even funny. It simply shows professionalism, and if you have a bunch of typos on your website, the support there must stink. As far as forums go, official announcements should have proper grammar, general discussions I think it's fine to have a few typo's here and there.

They can be, but some people have learning disabilities and are trying their best. As long as I can understand what someone is trying to say, its all good.

I think for some its just lazy talking .. But in effect they are only missing 2 or 3 letters at most to type the proper word out. They can be, but some people have learning disabilities and are trying their best. As long as I can understand what someone is trying to say, its all good. Yeah i suppose this is true ... You cant really see the other person or know what they have to go through on a daily basis. Dave

Yes. I believe spelling and grammar are very important. I may not be the best at it myself, but, a place that has bad grammar and spelling tend to lose my business and those of my peers in our professional world. On forums, song lyrics, bad grammar, and spelling annoys me to no ends and makes me turn around and leave. It's not typos that bother me. It's especially things like: how r u 2day? Chances are if you're typing that you are either: a) my mother b) a teenager that thinks your precious half a second saved is more valuable then me not getting annoyed at you.

YES!! It is SO important especially if you are trying to run a professional forum such as PF or FP. I know that sometimes my grammar isn't the best, I spell poorly to sound "goofy" sometimes as Thomas, Dave, April, Teg, and Joshua have seen. We all do it, but there is a time and a place for it. If you want people to take you seriously, talk to you, and actually read what you have to say, you should speak with proper grammar and spelling.

Heck yes it is! There's room to slide in terms of actual discussions (to an extent), but I think the documentation, forum descriptions, etc should be top notch for any serious forum.

I think it's important on any forum to have decent spelling and grammar, I think having poor grammar and spelling errors on your forum makes it look less professional, and potential members might not sign up because of those errors.

It's funny how some members posting in this thread (who claim to be annoyed by poor grammar) have a lowercase letter at the beginning of their username. Hypocrisy!
