What are some ways that owners of forums, sites, or blogs can spot security issues and resolve them? What are some common issues you've come across and how did you fix them?

Keeping your software up to date is a good security measure. Not installing every plug-in under the sun is another good one. Keeping a unique password (that isn't use anywhere else) to your admin account on your forum is a must.

This may not be totally related to Proboards, But i think the biggest security issue with most places is account security as @joe mentioned.
You can tell people over and over again and still some will choose the most obvious and unsecure password know to man and they will use that same password for almost every online account they own.
A prime example would be email accounts ... If you manage to access someones email account you basically can access anything else anywhere lol.
I think more and more places should start to introudce 2 Step Verfication which could be in a form of a simple authenticator app which generates a unique code every 30 seconds (Which i use for 98% of my accounts) lol or they can be in a form of text message.

I have complex 30+ character passwords and a unique one for each forum/website I visit.
I've been a member of a few forums that got hacked. The hackers downloaded/stole the database. If this happens at any forum you visit, a hacker can decrypt your hashed password and use it to login to your other accounts around the web (if you use the same password everywhere).
Best to have a different password for each forum you visit because if one gets compromised, you'll have nothing to worry about.
....To add onto that, anyone can make a forum, even dishonest people. A corrupt admin possibly decrypt your hashed password as well. You can never be too careful when it comes to password security. Using a long/complex one will make it harder for someone to decode it and using a unique one for each site you visit will make it useless to the person who gets their hands on it.

Wow, how do you keep up with all those passwords?! xD That is a good idea, though.
