I used to do this thing on my forums where -- if activity was getting kind of low -- I would create a member account with a username and post style that was completely different from mine. I would then use this member to spur on discussion, maybe start debates, as well as just create new topics throughout the forum so that I wasn't the only one posting(or so it looked). Eventually I had like 4 accounts that I would sometimes log into to help discussion along on my main forum.
I don't know if this is like cheating, but sometimes all it takes is a fresh face to really increase activity. I know it definitely helped my forums out a lot.
Have you ever done anything like this? What are your thoughts on it?

I used to do this when I first started out, but now I find it utterly and totally pointless. It's kind of fun talking to yourself and making up responses to questions on the odd occasion, but in all honesty, it's not worth it. People do figure out it's you in the end, especially if you and the "ghost" user have the same posting ability/construction/whatever.

I've never done that. First off, I'm not that good of an actor to be able to come off as a totally different personality. Even if it's just via typing, which would be easier than actual acting, I realize. I feel like it would be easy to get confused though and you'd end up making a mistake and giving away your true identity anyway.

That's exactly why I never liked the idea of ghost accounts anyway.

I have a test account that I'm using to be an impartial moderator, but I don't have a big enough forum for that to be an issue. In terms of posting, I don't think I could do it. I already spend enough time talking as myself on my forum and I'm definitely not a good enough writer to pull it off.
