So if your forum has been around for many years, you know how threads can build up easily. And sometimes the thread runs its course and goes years without receiving any new replies. What do you usually do when that happens? Do you leave it in the board so that it can possibly be revived by a new member who hasn't posted in it? Or do you utilize a trash bin (board) on your forum to keep them out of reach? Also, do you have it visible to your members (viewing access only) or do you think it's better left only to staff? I've only recently implemented a trash bin on my forum and it was largely because I've randomly gone through the last pages of some of my boards and realized that there is absolutely no need for the thread to be revived. It can just get so overwhelming because there's so much of it and some of it brings back memories (the joys of convincing your now-exes to join your forum, lol). Anyway, I was just curious as to how all of my fellow long-time forum admins manage old threads like that.

Something that I set up but never seem to use. It is a good idea to purge old threads that haven't been replied to in years, and moving them to a trash bin forum doesn't remove them from post count.

I've never written off an older post just because in my mind I think it might affect SEO in some way (now whether that is true or not I'm not sure). Although I believe if you still "keep" the thread and put in a trash bin then perhaps it won't matter but again, I'm no expert in that area. I do use a trash bin (but I call it a Recycling Bin) just for spam like threads or threads that I have gone way off topic then I move it in there. I don't make a habit of moving old threads on the regular basis though because I think most people don't look past 2 or 3 pages in a board.

I have a spot for archived threads, but it's mainly for those that are archive worthy. I choose to delete anything that's not needed on the board but is also true garbage (spam and/or troll feed, so to speak).

I think a trash bin forum is a necessity. I used it frequently, usually for old posts that had lost their value to the forum, or extremely off topic threads. Also spam threads were moved in there if they weren't deleted. It's a really good thing to have, especially when you suddenly need to get rid of some topics but don't know where to put them!

It depends on the thread in question. If it's spam, or if it's posts from a banned member, automatically they go in the trash bin. However, general discussion topics that haven't been picked up on in a while, I usually let those slide.

It's a really good thing to have, especially when you suddenly need to get rid of some topics but don't know where to put them! Exactly. I'm finding that in our early days on my forum, some of my members had a habit of creating a thread when they had a question or comment about something that they wanted me to see, instead of using that trusty PM feature, haha. I've found at least 3 threads so far with a simple "hey april" as the title...

I never move threads that don't get replies to the trash, I will only move spam topics, etc, to the trash. The other threads could always get new replies, who knows if someone is going to go necroposting.
