I remember once I was reprimanded by forum staff and members for bringing up an old thread that was started like a year ago. I was pretty blown away by how they reacted but I understand each forum has their own rules and regulations. I had reached out to the administrator at that time confused why it wasn't something highlighted in the actual rules of the forum. I was told that it was common knowledge. Do you allow necroposting? If not - is it something that you enforce against strongly?

As long as it's contributing to the topic. I don't care when the last post was.
I have show discussion threads on my board, and if people want to pop in and add something to the topic at hand, then go for it.

I allow it. I feel it's better to bump up an older topic instead of making duplicate topics.

I don't mind bringing back old topics, actually as an admin/staff member I make sure to bring back old ones so members feel comfortable about posting in them. xD

If a thread is over, say, one year old, I'd prefer that new topics be created. But, other wise, there really is no harm in it.

I love resurrecting old threads! I've actually never heard of a forum that doesn't allow it. I mean, I don't understand where the harm is, I guess. On my own forum, it brings back fond memories as well, and I don't think that's a bad thing.

I don't join those forums that do not allow bumping old threads. They would rather cheat their stats and have the same topics posted multiple times all over the forum, than have one consolidated thread of the same topic with pages full of posts and discussion.
I'm sorry, but I do not think that's a viable approach of managing a forum, it's cheating the stats and I simply want nothing to do with forums that do not allow it. If it's an old thread and you have something to legitimately post there to add to the discussion, then bump it. I do not yell or ban anyone for doing it, I want to encourage people to post, not be scared of posting.

We allow it on mine, sometimes the staff bring old topics up for newer members to join in on.

I actually used to have a pretty strict rule against it. I felt like there was not point in bringing up a debate over like 4 or 5 months old. Sure, maybe you could add something new to the discussion, but a lot of the times the members that had participated in that discussion would be gone or no longer interested in that post. I had a rule against it in place just because I had never actually seen anyone do any beneficial necroposting on my forum

I allow it too. I hate sites that don't allow it. Why not let us bring back old conversations? I've been on sites in the past where this practice is strictly prohibited at all costs, even on general discussion forums, and it just irks me. I mean, I can see some circumstances where this would be required, like say an important business forum or something, but for a site that has no purpose other than for people to get together and hang out? Ridiculous!

Sure, maybe you could add something new to the discussion, but a lot of the times the members that had participated in that discussion would be gone or no longer interested in that post. But that doesn't mean that newer members who hadn't yet contributed to the discussion didn't have something interesting to say though! I do get what you're saying, but sometimes it doesn't really matter if the original members are still there or not.
