Okay, so I have been on forums that pretty much hire mods, give them a basic understanding of what should be done in certain situations, and then leave the rest up to the moderators discretion. (Like warning people, etc..)
And then I've been on forums with systems, point systems, reputation systems, card systems which is horribly complicated, you name it. The mods go based off of the system when doing moderation duties around the forum, and then depending on what system the forum has in place, logs it or adds points to a user or asks admins what to do now.
What moderation system do you have in place? Do you let your mods have their discretion while giving them a "guideline" of how certain things should work, or do you go full out on making a system for the moderators to follow?

I let the moderators use their own best judgment in what to do in a certain situation. If I don't agree with it, I'll talk to them about what they did, if they banned someone for a minor offence, I'd unban the person and then coach the moderator on what to actually do in whatever situation that happened.

I have moderation training. Where I personally train each new moderator. Also, I re-train every few months.

I have a set of rules on my forum that everyone is expected to follow. I only ask that the moderators enforce the rules of the forum and they are allowed to use their best judgement.

I let them be who they are without changing them. There are those times when people just don't see eye to eye, and learn and move on. I am a very laid back person and admin that way. I tell them that we all have lives and that always comes first.

We have guide lines on mine, but usually i tell them to use their common sense on matters, but we have never had issues, we have only one Mod, and she is happy doing hat she does.

I just would let my mods do what they thought was best. There were rules to my forum, and the mods would enforce them in the way that they thought they needed to be enforced. If a mod made an action that I didn't agree with, I would discuss it with them and sometimes have to make an action of my own. Overall though, I think that's the best way to do it. Points systems and stuff like that are confusing to me, and they seem to be very oppressive and overwhelming to new members. I'd rather just have a relaxed atmosphere that people can have fun in, and worst case scenario be issued a warning for stepping too far out of line once in a while

I don't really give my staff a set of rules, but we do get together in our private board to discuss members and their behavior. I don't want them to think that they should need to overpower everyone else. That's why it's called a team.

We have some basic guidelines written, but nothing serious. I let my moderators act freely - they usually go through a trial period and if they seem to fit the position they are hired and left alone to do the work.
