So, the most recent computer that I purchased did not come with a DVD/CD drive. We've been browsing at Laptops again, for my husband, and are noticing that more and more of them are without DVD/CD drives. However, it's a bit understandable as most all software can be purchased and downloaded from the internet directly to a device. What are your thoughts on this? Do you have a DVD/CD drive? If so, do you think you need it? If not, what challenges have you found without having the use of one?

I was in this exact situation not too long ago when I was looking for a new laptop. It seemed all the decent specced machines in my price point lacked optical drive, and those with drives which were in my budget, lacked somewhat in other features. Eventually I capitulated*, and bought a laptop that was particular top-notch, opting to borrow my brother's USB optical drive. So far I've used the portable drive once Also external drives are super cheap now, so for something you might not use very often, it's definitely handy. I don't miss not having a native drive at all!

I'm with @dave on this. My laptop does have the drive, and even though I don't use it that often, I still like to know that it's there.

What are CD's again?
But really, I think most PC's are going flatter, smaller, thinner, and in order to do that you cannot really have a CD drive in the laptop as most of them would completely defeat the purpose of having a flatter and thinner laptop. Honestly though, I rarely use a CD drive. Usually they have USB installers for most CD drives nowadays so it's not really worth it to buy a CD drive unless you seriously need it, or you work with CD's all the time. Getting a USB CD drive is pretty cheap too.

I need one and have to have one. That's how I set up my printer and homeschooling. Other than that, I never use it.
