My favourite free forum software would be MyBB. phpBB is good too but I still prefer MyBB.
What about you?

phpBB! I generally prefer paid though. Have one vB, one IPB, and two xF licenses.

phpBB or MyBB. Having complete control over the source code is always great.

MyBB, ProBoards is fine and all but everything you do to customize it isn't shown on the mobile version, plugins don't even run on the mobile version, because of that I actually no longer use ProBoards. If I want a userbar to show on mobile, it should show on both desktop and mobile versions, not just on the desktop and on mobile you get a little 1 star, ya know? That and I mean come on, plugins don't run. Some plugins should be able to run on the mobile version, I think it's rather stupid that they don't.

SMF for me, I am probably the 1% here with my opinion, but for me SMF was always good and I am currently hosting a forum with SMF installed on it

SMF has come a long way in the past couple of years though.

phpBB definitely. Still have trouble with permissions sometimes but I love it otherwise.

I prefer paid forums (Xenforo) but I like SMF (Used if for sometime) and vanillaforums (it has nice skins but it's limited)

See, those mobile limitations are not a deal breaker for me because I hardly ever browse forums on a mobile device. For one thing, I just don't like it, I like having an actual physical keyboard when writing posts and stuff. But yeah, Proboards for me too. I like the community and how user-friendly it has always been.

In the past I would have said SMF, I like how easy it was to use on the admin side. Right now I would have to say ElkArte, which is supermax fork of SMF 2.1. It has so much built in I would almost compare it to Xenforo, and would use it.
